Navigating your own lane. Do you stand out?

Dear Business Owner

Please do not compare your journey to another. I admit you should constantly scan your environment and benchmark against best practices for your industry. However, do not get caught in the trap of comparison.

Here are two examples of what that trap looks like:

  1. ‘ XYZ business started 2 years after mine but they have had less barriers to getting their product to launch. That’s unfair’
  2. ‘ ABC business constantly ‘feeds’ their clientele with promotional offers. We should do same.’

What should you be doing?

The best advice is to know your unique selling proposition. Simply stated, what makes your product or service offering unique?  For your business you must create a killer, out of this world USP to ensure that your target market notices you and sees just how special you are. Want to get your potential client to buy from you? Do a great job at this.

Take a closer look at this example:

Jessie is 2 months into launching his spa and its menu of services. Within a five mile distance there are 2 other spas in  high traffic areas with excellent staff. Jessie makes an executive decision to offer a specialty service to athletes and persons with specific injuries. He therefore stands out by offering sports massages, rehabilitative massages and traditional acupuncture.  His USP is therefore a specialty massage to a specific target market.
