It had been over two years since my last hike—Boeri Lake in Dominica, which was as challenging as it was rewarding (think slips, mud, and sore muscles). This time, the setting was different: a crater rim in St. Eustatius. Less intense, perhaps, but just as fulfilling. The views were expansive, the air refreshingly crisp, and by the end, there was that familiar sense of accomplishment.
This was part of a client engagement for Consulting Services by King and Associates Limited (CSBKAL). And as it turns out, the hike offered more than scenery; it provided valuable perspective for the first phase of our work.
Leverage What Makes You Unique
Our guide—a local beekeeper, innovator, and natural storyteller—brought the island to life. Through his stories, it became clear how deeply connected he was to preserving Statia’s natural and cultural heritage.
It reinforced a key question for any destination or business seeking to grow: what are your unique assets?
In a crowded global marketplace, competitiveness isn’t about doing more—it’s about clearly defining and amplifying what makes you distinct.
Engage the People Who Know Best
One of the most critical aspects of our work—and something both CSBKAL and the client prioritized—was stakeholder engagement.
Local stakeholders don’t just understand the challenges; they’ve lived them. Their insights are essential to shaping practical, relevant solutions. More importantly, engaging them builds trust. And on a small island, trust isn’t optional; it’s foundational to any successful initiative.
Invest in Your Greatest Asset: People
Sustainable growth and meaningful revenue generation ultimately come down to one thing: people.
For destinations like Statia, strengthening competitiveness means investing in the local skills base: whether in sustainable development, customer experience, cultural preservation, eco-tourism, or hospitality operations.
Building these capabilities not only enhances the visitor experience but also ensures the destination is positioned to attract the right kind of investment.
A View Toward What’s Next
As the hike came to an end, I paused to take in the ocean view—a reminder of Statia’s rich history as a key Caribbean transshipment hub. There’s legacy here, but more importantly, there’s opportunity.
As for the adventurous tourists eager to descend into the crater… that’s a story for another day. Let’s just say—we’ll be back.
