One of the most popular workshops I’ve delivered over the years has focused on creating Facebook and Instagram (now Meta) advertising campaigns. At the time, it made perfect sense. Organic reach was declining, accommodation providers wanted more direct bookings, tour operators wanted more enquiries, and entrepreneurs were looking for practical ways to generate leads.
Many participants left the workshop feeling empowered to launch campaigns, and some saw encouraging results. But over time, I noticed something interesting.
Advertising Can Generate Enquiries. Strategy Builds a Business.
Over the years, I’ve worked with hospitality, tourism and service-based businesses that relied heavily on Meta advertising to fill rooms, sell experiences or generate enquiries.
The pattern was often the same.
A campaign would generate interest. There might even be a few bookings.
Then the campaign ended.
The enquiries slowed.
And the business found itself preparing to launch another ad simply to keep the pipeline moving.
Advertising had become the strategy.
The reality is that advertising should support your business strategy—not replace it.
What Has Changed?
When I first delivered Meta Ads workshops in 2021 and 2022, success depended heavily on defining highly specific audiences—where they lived, what they liked, their interests and online behaviours.
Today, the landscape looks very different.
Artificial intelligence, machine learning and Meta’s evolving algorithms now place far greater emphasis on creative performance. Your images, videos and messaging generate engagement signals that help the platform identify the people most likely to respond.
That shift makes one thing even more important.
If your creative isn’t guided by a clear business strategy, the platform may find people who engage—but not necessarily the customers your business actually needs.
Technology has evolved.
The importance of strategy has only increased.
Why Strategy Still Matters
One of the first conversations I have with prospective clients is about strategy. Interestingly, it’s often the part they want to skip.
Many business owners are eager to move straight into implementation—launching campaigns, redesigning websites or creating social media content.
Others believe AI can generate a complete strategy in minutes.
Artificial intelligence is an incredible tool, and I use it regularly. But AI can analyse information.
It CANNOT replace the commercial judgement, industry experience and strategic thinking needed to position your business for long-term success.
Your strategy should reflect your business not a generic template.
Strategy Is Your Blueprint for Growth
A well-developed strategy answers questions that advertising never will.
- Who are your most profitable customers?
- What makes your business genuinely different?
- Which markets should you prioritise?
- Where should you invest your marketing budget?
- How do you increase revenue without simply increasing occupancy?
- What partnerships should you be developing today to support tomorrow’s growth?
- What risks could affect your business over the next three to five years?
Stop Asking “How Do I Get More Bookings?”
Instead, ask:
“Do I have a strategy capable of delivering sustainable growth?”
Marketing without strategy often creates short-term activity. Strategy creates long-term direction.
The businesses that consistently outperform their competitors don’t necessarily advertise more.
They make better strategic decisions.
